A WINDOW at the former Poundland store in Hailsham was smashed overnight on Friday (7 November), less than a week after the branch permanently closed its doors.
The incident happened at the vacant retail unit in the Quintins Shopping Centre, where the discount retailer traded until last weekend (2 November) following a decision by the building’s landlord to end Poundland’s lease.
The vandalism marks a fresh blow for the town’s shopping area, which has already seen public disappointment over the closure of one of its largest retailers.
Poundland’s departure followed news that the landlord had ‘other plans for the location’, bringing an end to the store’s long presence in the town. The closure came despite the company’s earlier assurances that the branch would remain open during its nationwide restructuring, following its sale to Gordon Brothers in June.
Anyone who may have information about the incident are being urged to Sussex Police.
