MEDIATION Plus, a local charity supporting people to resolve conflict and rebuild communication, has become a Sussex-wide service following a series of mergers.

Originally formed through the merger of mediation charities in Wealden, Eastbourne, Hastings and Rother, Mediation Plus has now expanded across the whole of Sussex, including Brighton & Hove and West Sussex, while continuing to operate from its original Hailsham office, Southview, shared with Hailsham Citizens’ Advice on Western Road.

The charity provides a range of services designed to support people experiencing conflict and difficult relationships. This includes Neighbourhood Mediation for issues such as noise, anti-social behaviour and disputes between neighbours; one-to-one support, known as Conflict Coaching, Time2Talk, supporting young people aged 11–18 and their parents or carers to improve communication and reduce conflict at home; and Family Mediation for separating or divorcing couples.

Alice Matthews, Chief Executive of Mediation Plus, said: “Conflict can have a huge impact on people’s wellbeing, relationships and sense of safety, and many people feel stuck or unsure where to turn. Mediation and one to one support give people a safe and supportive space to have difficult conversations and find their own way forward. We want people across Hailsham and the wider community to know that support is available and that they do not have to struggle on alone.”

Mediation Plus works with residents directly, as well as accepted referrals from housing providers, councils, including Wealden District Council, schools, police and other agencies. Many services are free to access, and you can find out more and make a referral through the charity’s website.

A service user said: “I cannot praise the team enough for the work they put in to helping my daughter and I get our relationship back on track. They were structured in their approach and took time with each party to ensure everyone was comfortable with the process and direction of mediation. So glad I reached out to the team. Thank you”

The charity’s Time2Talk service is currently part of the Hailsham Tesco Stronger Starts scheme, where customers can vote for local good causes using blue tokens in participating Tesco stores. Mediation Plus is encouraging local residents to support the project with their votes, helping the charity continue supporting families and young people across Sussex. Please don’t forget to pick up your tokens.
