THE future of a Hailsham pub has been thrown into uncertainty after its landlord suffered life-changing injuries during an incident with a customer.
Philip Ashby, who has run the Railway Tavern on Station Road since 2017, confirmed in a heartfelt statement that he remains in hospital and faces a long road to recovery.
He said: “As many customers will be aware, the pub has been closed for several days as a direct result of the severe injury I received when dealing with an unruly customer. I am still in hospital and likely to be here several days more, before I can be released and start long-term rehabilitation.
“I have life-changing injuries and will need at least six months to regain mobility. The profitability of the pub is not sufficient to compensate for incidents such as this and I have therefore decided that the pub will not reopen under my ownership.
“I am open to discussions with prospective buyers but any discussions should be conducted privately, away from this forum. I will conclude by thanking all patrons for their custom since I took over the pub in 2017.”
The Railway Tavern has long been a familiar social hub in the town, news of its closure a shock to many regulars.
In response, a local resident has launched an online fundraiser to support Mr Ashby as he begins his recovery journey.
Jade, who set up the appeal despite never having met Philip personally, said she was moved to act after reading his statement.
She said: “I don’t know Philip personally, but reading his message and learning about what has happened moved me deeply. He has been a part of this community since taking over the pub in 2017, creating a space where many people have shared good times and lasting friendships.
“Now, in his time of need, I believe we can come together as a community to show support. This fundraiser is an opportunity to ease some of the financial burden Philip faces as he recovers and adapts to life with these life-changing injuries. Every contribution, no matter the size, will make a difference and demonstrate to Philip that he is not facing this alone.”
The crowdfunder, titled Help Philip Heal After Life-Changing Injury, has already begun attracting donations from local people wishing to show their support.
