A SUPERMARKET will be able to install solar panels on the roof of its Hailsham store and has been told to fix the clock.

In a decision issued on Monday (July 6), Wealden District Council gave the green light for the system on the roof of Tesco store in North Street.

Planning officers said the panels could be installed through permitted development rights, so do not require formal planning permission.

Through application documents, representatives for the supermarket chain said the system would comprise 618 individual solar panels mounted on the flat western section of the building’s roof.

These panels are not expected to exceed 20cm in height and would be set back from the edge of the roof.

The application was supported by Hailsham Town Council, although the authority also requested the supermarket to ‘repair the store’s clock’ while carrying out the installation works.

For further information see application WD/2026/0992/P12 on the Wealden District Council website.
