DRIVERS are facing severe disruption this morning (Wednesday) after an overnight car fire closed a section of the A27 between Polegate and Drusillas.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service says the blaze caused damage to the road surface, with the stretch expected to remain shut until at least midday while repairs are carried out.

The closure has left surrounding routes gridlocked, with heavy congestion reported across Polegate, Hailsham and the wider area.

Traffic is particularly slow around the Boship Roundabout, while a separate incident on the A22 near Golden Cross is adding to the delays.

Bus services across the district are also being hit, with operators warning of long hold-ups to timetables.

A third incident on the A267 at the Boship Roundabout in the afternoon also saw more traffic delays as the road was closed after the accident.

Motorists are being urged to allow extra time for their journeys and to avoid the A27 where possible until the road reopens.
