DESPITE growing speculation that Hailsham’s Poundland store may be closing, a company spokesperson has told Hailsham News there is currently no information to confirm the branch is shutting down.
The statement follows increased online discussion and local reports suggesting the store, located in The Quintins Centre, is set to close.
When asked directly, a Poundland Head Office Marketing spokesperson said: “I have no information to say that Hailsham is closing.”
In June, Poundland announced a major business development, with its parent company Pepco Group selling the retailer to global advisory firm Gordon Brothers. The sale includes plans for a significant restructuring of the business after what the company described as a ‘challenging period of trading.’
Under the new ownership, Poundland will continue to be led by chief executive Barry Williams, who returned to the business earlier this year. Gordon Brothers is backing the turnaround with up to £80 million in funding, with the aim of streamlining operations and refocusing the business.
Mr Williams said in a statement: “Although recent trading has been challenging, we have built a turnaround plan with a simplified and more focused Poundland at its heart, as we aim to deliver the amazing value our customers expect.”
No detailed list of store closures has been released as part of the restructure, and the Hailsham branch remains open at this time.
When commenting on the fact the building has been listed on Right Move, the spokesperson added: “It could be that the landlord has simply put the property on the market but we’re looking into it.”
