A 23-YEAR-OLD man from Hailsham has died following a serious multi-vehicle collision on the A21 near Robertsbridge.
Emergency services were called to the scene at around 8.20pm on Saturday (April 11) after a BMW travelling northbound was involved in a crash with three other vehicles.
The driver of the BMW, a young man from Hailsham, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.
Two people travelling in another vehicle were taken to hospital with serious injuries, while a further five individuals sustained minor injuries and also required hospital treatment.
Police have confirmed that the BMW had been involved in a pursuit shortly before the collision. A referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which will carry out an independent investigation as is standard procedure in such cases.
Detective Superintendent Andy Wolstenholme said: “This was a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the family of this young man and all those affected.
“An investigation is underway to understand the full circumstances, and there will be increased police activity in the area while this is ongoing.
“I would like to thank the public for their patience during the emergency response and for their understanding as our enquiries continue.”
The A21 remains closed today (April 12) while investigations continue.
Police are urging anyone with information, dashcam footage or CCTV that could assist enquiries to come forward by contacting officers online or via 101, quoting Operation Drummer.
