HAILSHAM Tennis Club’s ladies’ second team played their last match in the winter league at home recently to Seaford. After a few losses, the team needed a good result in order to avoid relegation from their division.
First pair, Narun Chea and Georgia Lee, gave them a good start, winning in straight sets against Seaford’s second pair, Bernie Donaldson and Ruby Clough, 6-3, 6-2.
The second pair, Barbara Cordner and Stacey Clay, kept up the good work, beating the Seaford first pairing, Liz Weinberg and Emma Levett, 6-2, 7-6.
In the reverse legs, Narun and Georgia guaranteed the match with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Liz and Emma.
Barbara and Stacey made a good start against Bernie and Ruby, winning the first set 6-2, only to be pegged back 2-6 by the Seaford pair. In the championship tie-break decider (first to 10 pints) the Hailsham pair won 10-7 to give the team a clean sweep, 4-0.
They stand at fifth in the table and must wait for teams below them to play their final matches before their fate is sealed.
