AN initiative to improve the appearance of the town centre has moved a step forward, as Hailsham Town Council donates £600 towards the scheme.

The decision follows a recent meeting between the Town Mayor Cllr Chris Bryant, Deputy Mayor Cllr Colin Mitchell and representatives of the Hailsham & District Chamber of Commerce and Hailsham Forward.

The meeting focused on identifying constructive, forward-looking solutions to support local businesses, rather than dwelling on the wider economic challenges currently affecting high streets nationwide. Discussions centred on practical measures designed to strengthen the town centre’s visual appeal, promote local enterprise and encourage increased footfall.

Among the proposals outlined by the Chamber of Commerce is a scheme to install high-quality vinyl wraps on vacant retail units and shopfronts.

The initiative aims to present a more vibrant and welcoming appearance in areas affected by temporary retail unit closures, helping to create a positive impression for residents and visitors alike. The visual enhancements are intended to reinforce confidence in the town centre while longer-term occupancy solutions are pursued.

In addition to the agreed sponsorship, the Town Council has indicated its support in principle for further collaborative work exploring the potential use of vacant premises for temporary pop-up restaurants and pop-up retail ventures. Such initiatives could provide short-term trading opportunities for entrepreneurs while increasing activity within the town centre.

The Council will continue to liaise closely with the Chamber of Commerce and Hailsham Forward as plans develop, including offering appropriate administrative and publicity support where feasible.
