PLANS for a new medical centre in Hailsham have moved a step closer after Wealden District Council approved the initial design for the proposed development in Reef Way.
The council’s Cabinet has agreed to progress the project to its next stage, which will involve developing more detailed designs and carrying out further investigations before a planning application is submitted.
The proposed three-storey building would bring together two existing GP practices under one roof, with the aim of increasing the availability of healthcare services for residents in Hailsham and surrounding communities.
According to the council, the new facility would contain 30 consulting rooms, alongside reception and waiting areas, clinical facilities, offices, meeting rooms and staff accommodation.
Plans also include accessible public toilets and a specialist Changing Places facility for patients and visitors who require additional space and equipment.
The council says the development is intended to address increasing pressure on local GP services, particularly as Hailsham’s population continues to grow and age.
NHS Sussex Integrated Care Board has identified Hailsham as a priority area for investment in primary healthcare facilities, according to the council.
The authority is working alongside NHS Sussex and other healthcare partners to progress the scheme, which it says would provide additional capacity and more suitable accommodation for local medical services.
Following Cabinet’s approval of the concept design, the council has begun the tender process to appoint a contractor to undertake the next phase of design work, known as RIBA Stage 3.
This will include further investigations of the Reef Way site and the preparation of more detailed plans, with a planning application currently expected to be submitted in summer 2027.
Councillor Kelvin Williams, Wealden District Council’s lead councillor for Public Health and Asset Management, said: “Delivering a new medical centre at Reef Way is an important commitment to the people of Hailsham. As the town has grown, existing GP practices have faced increased pressure on their services, and their current buildings have limited space to expand. This purpose-built centre would increase capacity for GP appointments and treatment, improve accessibility for patients and provide modern facilities that support the long-term health needs of Hailsham’s growing and ageing population. We have remained determined to move the project forward despite the significant financial and construction challenges it has faced.”
Residents can follow updates on the project through the council’s Let’s Talk Wealden website.
