HAILSHAM’S former Deputy Town Clerk and Reform candidate, Mickey Caira, has won the by-election for the West Ward, by clinching almost 50% of the votes.

The results were counted this evening (27 November) at the Summerheath Hall, where it was announced by returning officer, Heather Blanshard, the turnout was only 19.58% which equated to a total of 574 votes.

Mr Caira (Reform UK) emerged victorious with 278 votes (48.43%), ahead of Emma Clarke (Liberal Democrats) on 178 votes, John Puttick (Independent) on 65 votes and Ali Stevens (Green Party) on 49 votes.

Commenting on the win, Caira told Hailsham News: “Having worked so long in Hailsham, and leaving last year so suddenly, I wanted to come back and finish what I started.

“I’ll be supporting local business, supporting really local community groups — it’s something I’ve very much been heavily involved in previously and would like to continue doing so through the local council.

Being a Reform member is not so important locally, but it’s about the community — it’s all about the community of Hailsham.”

Caira is already known locally as a town councillor in Polegate and previously worked at Hailsham Town Council as Deputy Clerk.

Reform clinched another seat in East Sussex on 20 November, with Aidan Christian Fisher winning the Hastings – Ashdown and Conquest by-election.
