HAILSHAM’S new civic beacon was officially lit for the first time on Sunday (June 7).
The ceremony formed part of Hailsham Town Council’s inaugural Prom in the Park event, held at the Western Road Recreation Ground, where hundreds of residents gathered to enjoy an afternoon of entertainment and community celebration.
The beacon was ceremonially lit by Dave Chapman of Hailsham Bonfire Society, involving other members of the society.
Standing five metres high and constructed from solid oak, the new beacon has been installed to provide Hailsham with a focal point for future civic celebrations, commemorations and community events.
The beacon is mounted on a substantial concrete foundation measuring 1.2 metres by 1.2 metres and 1.6 metres deep, with the oak pole itself measuring 25cm by 25cm.
Hailsham Town Council said the project cost approximately £3,000, with the funding coming from Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) contributions. The money is provided by local housing developers to help councils deliver projects and facilities that benefit the wider community.
