HAILSHAM Hockey Club has marked the start of its new season with a special event today (Sunday 14 September), celebrating the unveiling of a state-of-the-art pitch at Hailsham Academy.
The £250,000 project was made possible thanks to significant support from Hailsham Academy, Hailsham Town Council, Wealden District Council, Sport England and a host of local businesses and community fundraising efforts.
The Mayor of Hailsham, Councillor Chris Bryant, had the honour of pushing off the first ball to start the day’s opening match on the newly-laid surface.
John Bartlett, from Hailsham Hockey Club, praised the efforts that made the development possible.
He said: “We’d like to extend our thanks to Wealden District Council, Sport England and Hailsham Town Council for their funding towards the pitch, which was a massive boost to help us reach our target. I’d also like to thank the businesses who supported us, with an extra special mention to Smythe and Barrie, who have joined as our main club sponsor for an initial period of three years.”
The milestone was celebrated during the club’s annual club day, which brought together players, families, and supporters for a packed schedule of hockey and community activities.
A short ceremony allowed the club to formally thank funders and supporters.
The facility upgrades, which include improvements to the pitch lighting, were achieved through a combination of match funding, grants and a successful Crowdfunder campaign. The hockey club itself contributed £25,000 raised from social events, local businesses and community fundraising.
The new pitch is expected to benefit not only the club, but also local schools and community groups, continuing a partnership that began more than 20 years ago when the original surface was first laid at the college.
Club officials said the development symbolises more than a sporting upgrade, it reflects the generosity and collaboration of the local community.
An official opening of the pitch is expected to be held by the college in the near future.
