A HAILSHAM woman has called for mobility scooter users to take greater care after she was knocked to the ground and suffered a broken wrist.
The woman, who has asked to be identified only as “Mrs F”, told Hailsham News she was turning onto Hailsham High Street from St Mary’s Walk when she was struck by a mobility scooter travelling along the pavement.
She said the female rider apologised before leaving the scene.
Mrs F suffered extensive bruising down one side of her body, a swollen foot and an open wound on her toe, as well as a broken wrist.
She is now wearing a plaster cast and is due to return to Eastbourne District General Hospital for further X-rays and a replacement cast.
The injuries have forced her to cancel a planned holiday and left her unable to drive. As she lives alone, she has also had to rely on friends for help with everyday tasks.
Mrs F said: “I reckon I will have to put up with this for another four weeks. I’m just thankful it’s my wrist, as it could easily have been my hip, which would have been disastrous.
“I’m missing my tennis, which I play three times a week. Hopefully, I’ll be back on court by the beginning of October.”
She is now urging mobility scooter users to control their speed and remain mindful of pedestrians, particularly in busy parts of the town centre.
“Mobility scooter drivers need to be aware of the damage they can inflict by going too fast,” she said.
