SPEDEWORTH Motorsports says it has been told that oval racing at Arlington Stadium will no longer be allowed to continue.
The motorsport promoter announced on Facebook this morning that the stadium’s owners had informed it they no longer wished to host its racing events at the Eastbourne venue.
However, the owners of Arlington Stadium have not yet publicly confirmed their position. Hailsham News has contacted them for comment.
Spedeworth said the decision had been communicated with “immediate effect”, despite a racing event taking place at the stadium last night.
In its statement, the company said: “Spedeworth Motorsports are extremely disappointed to announce the end of racing at Arlington Stadium, Eastbourne.
“After bringing tens of thousands of drivers and race fans to the venue for well over 60 years, we have been informed this morning that the stadium owners no longer wish to host our oval racing events with immediate effect.”
Spedeworth described itself as not only a business operating at Arlington, but also a group of genuine fans of the venue.
It added: “We are extremely disappointed with this sudden decision, having enjoyed a great event at the stadium as recently as last night.
“We would like to thank everyone for their support at this much-loved venue. With decades of memories, we were hoping to create plenty more for years to come.”
Arlington Stadium has been closely associated with stock car, banger and other forms of oval racing for more than 60 years, attracting generations of drivers and spectators.
Spedeworth said it remained committed to growing the sport across its wider group of venues.
The company has promised a further update concerning existing bookings and other specific details in the coming days.
